Friday Video #13: Rufus New Years Eve

Since New Year's is around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to show the Gap commerical that Rufus Wainwright did back in 1998, where he performed "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" A full-length rendition of this song can be found on The McGarrigle Christmas Hour CD.

BTW I've been quite busy between prepping for the holidays, getting ready for the Tri-Cen XVIII run and finding a replacement job that I've having been able to do much blogging. Hopefully when things slow down I'll be able to post more. I hope 2007 will be a better year for me.

Naughty? Nice? Or a little bit of both?

Because I can't resist posting pictures of Karen Walker as a Santa Claus dominatrix.

Happy Holidays!

Friday Video #12: Nirvana Christmas

Here is a clip of the band Nirvana doing an unedited take for the RuPaul Christmas Ball special, which originally aired on Britian's Channel 4 back in late 1993. (Notice Kurt Cobian holding a death lily. ) They do an acappella version of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" and give some Christmas wishes toward RuPaul. This is what finally wound up on the proper special. One reason I miss the 90s when alt-rock bands like Nirvana weren't afraid to speak out against homophibia and support the gay community.

Going through a rough period

Haven't been very inspired to do blogging since I heard last week that my hours have been cut from my day job. Been looking at the want ads and filling out applications. Reading the latest edition of What Color Is Your Parachute? when I'd much rather be reading this instead. Speaking of which, I've also been getting into the Christmas rush with having a few items left to buy as presents. Wanted to check out the latest Dumspta Players show Godsmell this past Wednesday night but I didn't because I needed to save money for obvious reasons. I hope this rough period will pass by quickly and something good comes along.

BTW the latest colum for PhillyGayCalendar is out now, where I talk about the coffeehouses in Philly's gayborhood.

Friday Video #11: Rufus Wainwright with French & Saunders

Here is a clip of Rufus Wainwright performing "Spotlight On Christmas" on the French and Saunder's Christmas Celebrity Special, with Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders taking a humorous poke at folk festivals. This program first aired in Britian last year. It will make its American TV debut on BBC America on December 21.

Rufus's "Spotlight On Christmas" first appeared on the compilation Maybe This Christmas Too in 2004. It can also be found on the The McGarrigle Christmas Hour CD as well.

Bad news

I originally was going to blog today about the passing of Van Smith, who did the costumes and make-up in John Waters's movies, and who is credited with creating of Divine's look, but I just got some very bad news this afternoon. I don't post much about my day job, becaue I want to keep my blogging and my day job seperate. I just found out that come Janurary most of hours at my current job is going to be cut, which means that I'll be only working one day a week. And there is no way I can make a living on that. So that means that I'm going to have to scramble to find a replacement job. Naturally I'm upset. Right now I don't want to go into detail what happened.

And this happens a week and a half before Christmas. Ain't that a kick in the teeth.

Bad

I'm sorry for slacking off on posting here as of late. For the past week I had an ugly fit of depression brought on by among other things holiday season-releated stress. Hopefully I'll pick up on the posts here in the near future.

Been getting some great response to my latest PhillyGayCalendar.com column, which came out several days ago. I talk about the sale of Philly's main gay bar Woody's to the Weiss brothers, who also own Bump and Pure. Judging from the response it seems that several people think that with the leverage that the Weisses have in the Philly gay nightlife scene now, there's going to be a great potential for abuse of power.

BTW a new coffeehouse has just opened in the spot that used to house Millennium Coffee. Brew Ha Ha! is the latest store opening of the Delaware-based chain, which has 14 coffeehouses. It's not as omnipresent as Starbucks, but still with their opening in the spot that used to Millennium some people are going to consider that move as sacrilegious. I'll write more on this later.

Friday Video #10: Dolly Parton

The inspiration for posting this video of Dolly Parton performing "Dumb Blonde," her first hit on the country charts back in 1967, was of all things professional idiot Jessica Simpson. Jessica was performing at the 29th Annual Kennedy Center Honors this past Sunday, where Dolly was one of the five honorees. Jessica was singing "9 to 5" but she flubbed one of her lines even though she was reading from cue cards. (And she had about a month to prepare for this.) She then abruptly exited the stage, mumbling some excuse about being nervous. She then went back on and redid the song. The botched first take has hit the internet and the TV news shows. Looks like Jessica is heading for a nervous breakdown. At least she didn't get the chance to ruin Dolly's "Dumb Blonde!"

Friday Video #9: Blowoff

Today's video features Bob Mould spinning "I Would Die 4 U" by Space Cowboy at last month's Blowoff party in DC. I definitely have to go to one of them in the near future. Thanks for Joe My God for putting this up on YouTube.
