Some photos from Tri-Cen 18

This photo of the view of 13th and Walnuts streets in Philly was taken from my hotel room (from the fourth floor to be percise) at the Courtyard Marriott over New Year's Day weekend during the Philadelphians MC's run Tri-Cen XVIII. Click here to some more photos of what happened over that weekend. Sorry for taking so long to post about this, but hey better late than never.

Friday Video #16: Gang of Four

Since I've been listening to a lot of post-punk music in the past month, here is a clip of Gang of Four performing "To Hell With Poverty" on the British TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test on April 11, 1981. It would appear on the 1982 EP Another Day/Another Dollar, as well as on the Infinite Zero/American CD reissue of their 1981 LP Solid Gold. "To Hell With Poverty" is probably my favorite Gang of Four song.

Friday Video #15: Dawn's Hair

The following is an outtake from what is my all-time favorite movie, Female Trouble, which I recently found through the goodness of YouTube. Dawn Davenport gets expelled from school on Christmas Eve. This was meant to be as a build-up for the following "Nice girls don't wear cha-cha heels!" scene but this wound up on the cutting room floor instead.

Friday Video #14: Bodyrox feat. Luciana

This song has been a hit in England late last year and it's starting to get airplay on the US dance radio outlets. This is what the US dance music scene needs right now, something with a really punky and edgy attitude. If there's any justice this song would cross over onto the US Top 40, where I believe it can hold its own among all the rap that's hogging the charts right now.

Bodyrox is the work of house DJ Jon Pearn, who also is one of the half of the house duo Full Intention. Luciana has been kicking aound with dance music outfits in the past decade like Crush and Portobella; this is her first mainstream success in the UK.

Kele from Bloc Party comes out

Kele Okereke, the lead singer of Brit post-punk outfit Bloc Party (whose "Banquet" was one of my favorite singles of 2005) came out in an interview with the UK mag Guardian, and for the most part it's treated as a non-event. Which I suppose is progress. Not to mention my taste in music would be closer to his than, say, Lance Bass. BTW I am crazy to think that I get a little bit of a erotic vibe when I listen to the Engineers' Anti-Gravity Mix of "Blue Light" from Bloc Party's remix album? Anyway I'll be looking forward to their upcoming album, A Weekend In The City, which will be released next month.
